Since technology plays an essential role in this current
century, cyberbullying is the new concept of bullying among teenagers.
Teenagers
usually socialize trough Social Networks, but they are exposed and they become
an easy target of cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is reported as an aggressive
intentional act carried out by a group of contact, repeatedly and overtime
against a victim who can not easily defend him or herself (Smith et al., 2008).
Since human beings are considered sociable in all aspects, social networks have
become really popular. The problem is that teenagers usually upload and share all their personal information, their privacy does not exist anymore; in the process of being popular, adolescents tend to forget that they may be the perfect target for cyberbullying. Being bullied by the Net can affect the social aspects of the victim. For example, they became shy, or they even manage a low self-esteem.
If
parents monitor their son’s social accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), a
tragedy will not take place in their lives. Parents should be aware of the
information that their sons upload on the social networks. This piece of advice
must be taken into account since there are many cases of teenagers that
committed suicide because they were victims of cyberbullying and they could not
support too much pressure from the bully. For example, the case of Tyler
Clementi, an eighteen boy who jumped from George Washington bridge on September
22, 2010. [1] The decision of committing
suicide can be avoided among teenagers; parents just have to be more involved
in this area.
Cyberbullying
is not a game, but it is a new way of harming another person. Parents have to
be conscious that their children can be victims of this phenomenon, so they
have to be aware and make their children keep their privacy on their profiles
in order to avoid this phenomenon.
